Smart Island

back to overview

Büyükada" is the largest of the nine so-called Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara, near Istanbul, with an area of about 2 square miles (5 km2). It is officially a neighbourhood in the Adalar (Islands) district of Istanbul Province, Turkey. The electrical energy consumption is mainly associated with residential and tourism sector. The electricity production is generated by a diesel generation plant largely oversized compared to the winter power demand, created in order to cover peak loads summer.

This project aims to find smart solutions to increase economical and environmental efficiency of the energy use and the entire system of production, management and distribution of electricity by developing and implementing the software system for the Büyükada Island. Main objectives are listed below;

      To increase installations of intermittent and continuous distributed Energy resources (PV plant, rooftop PV, Biogas plant, other autonomous systems),

      To model the energy demand-supply trend in the software environment (SmartIsland will focus on developing a unified demand response architecture, then applicable also to large prosumers connected to the MV network, down to the household level and including smart lighting), and

      To implement semi-fast chargers with the integration of Energy Storage block, to provide grid demand optimization and interface with infrastructure dispatch (Energy will be provided by Energy autonom systems-all distributed and continuous),

      To enable software accessibility through smartphone apps, Smart Island web portal and kiosk solutions for public usage.
