back to overview

Conventional non-magnetic stainless steels used in oil and gas exploration have a corrosion resistance too low for modern and expensive tool systems. Especially pitting corrosion is a problem. It is the aim of the project to improve the performance of MWD/LWD housings by modifying the chemical composition of the non-magnetic steels used and their corrosion properties. Besides of enhanced corrosion properties which reduce the loss of material and energy in the field, producing steels with modified chemical composition may help in saving energy during elaboration of high Mn and N alloyed steel grades in the steelworks. The new developed steel will allow the concerned European industry to increase significantly its worldwide market share versus the North American and Japanese competitors.
