Key Milestones in Spain & EUROGIA relations

Spain ranks second most active EUROGIA2020 country after France. Let`s have a quick look at the key milestones in Spain - EUROGIA relations.

The interest of Spanish industry for EUROGIA gradually increased by the time the industry acknowledged EUROGIA as the tool for true partnerships. CDTI  was a strong support through this journey and its attractive soft loan scheme was the key reason of high Spanish involvement in EUROGIA project calls. Moreover, EUROGIA Spanish Board Members Acciona Energia and Leading Enterprises improved this high success rate by generating good quality projects with partners from other EUREKA Countries.

EUROGIA2020 & MERIC: Expanding Horizons

EUROGIA2020, the EUREKA Cluster for low carbon energy technologies, aims to expand its horizons through collaboration with MERIC (Marine Energy Research & Innovation Centre) in Chile. EUROGIA2020 is a bottom-up, industry driven, market oriented EUREKA programme, which addresses all areas of the energy mix, from renewable energy to efficiency, and reduction of carbon footprint of fossil fuels.

As an 8-year project initiated by Enel Green Power and DCNS, a EUROGIA2020 Board Member Company, MERIC is designed to be an innovation hub for marine renewables both in Chile and in global arena.

Sharing the same ambitions brought EUROGIA2020 and MERIC together and they signed a Memorandum of Understanding to initiate collaboration and to generate transnational energy technology projects in the field of marine renewables and beyond.

MERIC is supported by Chilean Government`s economic development organisation CORFO  (Corporación de Fomento de la Producción), as well as by the Chilean development organisation Fundación Chile and the R&D Foundation INRIA Chile.MERIC joined forces with EUROGIA2020 to bring marine renewable energy technologies to a new level with the aim of achieving its ambitious yet feasible goal: becoming the global leader in marine renewables.

The centre will focus on six domains during its 8-year mandate:  Marine resource assessment, site characterization, bio-fouling, bio-corrosion, environmental and social impact, and technology adaptation to extreme ocean conditions.  Distinctive Chilean sea conditions will allow MERIC experts to tackle maintenance problem, which is entailed as a major technology challenge by EUROGIA2020 Technology Roadmap for marine renewables, especially for Ocean Wave Power Generation.

A new EUREKA initiative: Global Stars

Chile is soon to join EUREKA Family with a new initiative entitled Global Stars, enabling the cooperation with non - EUREKA Countries.  Main funding agency behind MERIC, CORFO ( Corporación de Fomento de la Producción) signed a declaration of intent with EUREKA for a multi-lateral joint call within the scope of Global Stars. EUROGIA2020 aims to carry out the cooperation with MERIC under the umbrella Global Stars and actively participate in the pilot calls.

5 goals to achieve during the EUREKA Spanish Chairmanship

5 goals to achieve during the EUREKA Spanish Chairmanship (2016 - 2017)

EUROGIA2020 Board put froward ambitious yet feasible goals that will inspire the energy industry during the EUREKA Spanish Chairmanship (2016 - 2017).

Spain is the leading EUROGIA2020 country in terms of project submission and EUROGIA2020  has the objective of turning this local interest into a broader one, encompassing all the EUREKA Member and Associated countries.

EUROGIA2020 Goals 2016 -2017

- Integrating Research and Technology Organisations into EUROGIA Board : EUROGIA2020 aims to have RTOs from key EUROGIA2020 supporting countries as full members in order to have balanced country  representation in its Board and to extend its activities beyond industry. Development oriented RTOs  from Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Turkey with project generation capacity are invited to join EUROGIA2020 Board.

- Implementing Rotating EUROGIA2020 Chairmanship: EUROGIA2020 adopted rotating chairmanship for its Board with the aim of giving responsibility as well as the visibility to each of its Board Members.  EUREKA Spanish Chairmanship (2016 -2017)  will mark the first year of this adopted action.  Laurent Midrier, Vice President of Strategy and Innovation from Bureau Veritas, is assigned as the first Rotating Chairman of EUROGIA2020 Board for year 2016 -2017.

- Extending EUROGIA2020 Activities in Spain : EUROGIA2020 has two active Spanish Board Members : Acciona Energy and Leading Enterprises in its Board both in terms of project submission and commitment to EUROGIA2020 activities. EUROGIA2020 encourages new Spanish Energy Technology Companies to join EUROGIA2020 Board and to bring their expertise. This will help improve the Spanish success rate within EUROGIA2020, which already stands as an example for other EUREKA Countries.

- Internationalisation of EUROGIA2020 - Chile, the first target country :  Chile is soon to join EUREKA Family with a new initiative entitled Global Stars, enabling the cooperation with non - EUREKA Countries. EUROGIA2020  signed an Memorandum of Understanding with MERIC in Chile (Marine Energy Research and Innovation Center) to pave the way for collaborations and generate transnational projects with their participation. EUROGIA2020 will provide its full support in Chile`s EUREKA journey and aim to actively participate in pilot calls.

-EUROGIA2020 moves forward to new territories - Circular Economy : EUROGIA2020 will give special focus on circular economy,a field beyond its Technology Roadmap.  Valorization of waste and recycling key materials will help European Industry remain competitive in a world where Europe`s share of industrial output is shrinking. It is critical that industry industry takes the lead in putting world on a more sustainable path. This objective endorsed by COP21 will be promoted and supported by transnational EUROGIA2020 projects. Energy Storage and Smart Cities, which is a joint EUREKA Cluster Initiative, will continue to be core activity areas during Spanish EUREKA Chairmanship.

The ITEA PO Days is the perfect way to get a flying start in preparing for an ITEA Project Outline. Why?

§  “   A network is built from people and when you get to know them, you can know who to trust and you can build a consortium from that. Without meeting the people in person, this is more complicated”, according to Pasi Kuvaja of the University of Oulu who attended the PO Days since their very beginning in 1998;

§         The numbers show: 74% of the submitted ITEA 3 Call 2 POs resulted from the PO Days 2015. Similar results have been measured over the past few years;

§        You are able to present your project idea(s) or learn about project ideas in the poster session and during the pitch sessions and then discuss project ideas in workgroup sessions with those interested to be part of the project;

§        You can meet companies from all over the world in one spot, most probably the EUREKA associated countries Canada, South Korea, and South Africa as well;

§         You can learn from best practices presented by the ITEA Office and see how the ITEA Office can support you during the full project lifetime.
